In Those Genes
Ever wondered what Superman’s family would be like?
For starters, there definitely would be a granny, a very special one. What would you say her super power would be, well let’s see she witnessed a very bad accident where I almost lost my grandfather and she her husband (whom we did lose few months after the incident). She might look like your average old grandma, but you’d only find a few women who can handle something so catastrophic. That could possibly be her super power, her faith in Jesus and her very brave soul. I’m owe all my spiritual upbringing to this woman, she coaxed me to go to Sunday School, taught me all my prayers. If there is ever is a spiritual gene in my being, that I owe it to my Ammachi
There’s definitely Superdad and Supermom, talk about two very different human beings who have tolerated each other for more than 25 years and still are very much in love with each other. My Appa is a school teacher, been a teacher all his life, he’s one major exception to the saying ‘ people who can’t learn… teach’. Appa a ‘wannabe doctor’ turned Master of Botany, taught botany at school, learnt all about computers all by himself. Now he teaches less (read as NO) Botany and more computers. He’s like built to learn languages, that’s his super power. He has a very good mind for logic, that’s what programming is all about right. It’s all in the logic. He’s shown the way to binary world to hoards of people (he could be the Morpheus to School world, some of his students are now working in Adobe, Novell Netware. ‘Mani Sir’ as he’s known to the outside world (everything else that’s not family is outside world) is by far the best teacher his Alma mater ‘Christ Nagar School’ has ever seen. If you guys think that I teach well, or explain stuff well ( my sister would be the only one who might disagree) or good at picking up languages that would be a few of the many genes that I share with Appa. Appa plays the guitar, organ, and I’m not sure he had a whole lot of music instruments and he played all of them flute, banjo. (I’ve seen a photo of Appa with a Jimi Hendrix Hair style and playing a guitar. Sure I’ll be posting that with(out) his permission :))
Amma well she might be different from my Appa in a whole different ways like height etc, but the one thing that she also shares in common is she’s also majored in Botany. My Amma cooks really well, she loves stuff that are salty and really spicy, and I think the whole Palathra has a fair share in helping her to be the best cook that she is, cause she experiments these yummy dishes on us (she gets it right the first time most of the time). She is a very beautiful singer, sang for her church choir, sang in college, she still sings for the church choir, she teaches Christian Songs at the Sunday School. She’s taken up a keen interest in teaching ‘Action Songs’ to small kids in Sunday School, I should say she is a very good dancer too. Well this could be her Superpower, she cooks and sings her way to your heart. Well for guys in church who have heard me sing and my roomies who could make out the wailings from the bathroom as music those are just few of the many genes that I share with her .
Dexter has an Older one, Bart Simpson has a younger one, so do I. Meet my younger sister. Her super power would be finding out ways to annoy me. An engineer herself, IT engineer, she’s three years younger to me. Even if she annoys me most of the time I still love my sister. I think I’ve been pretty harsh on her, expecting a lot more than what she can, not being patient enough with her, well not spending much time with her, not helping her out with her homework. She was one appa and amma went really easy on even appachan and ammachi did, she was pampered a lot, she wrote with the refill pens at KG, I got to do it after I started losing a lot of ink pens and blotted my White uniform shirt pocket with blue ink. My Bindu is kinda pretty good person though a bit too out spoken at times, thinks with her heart and not with her head. I love my sister.
I have a brother named Vimal, he’s my cousin brother. He’s a Software engineer, he works on lot of open source stuff. He and his organization that he is part of are Free Software evangelists and are like active members of the Linux User Groups. He is very happy with his work, gets to do what he loves. The work that he does for all the NGOs, and government organizations are pretty small portals etc but he gets to see his users benefit from it-a very enviable job I should say.
So that sums up on what Superman’s family would look like. It’s not easy being a very happy united family with people so different in age, views and ideas etc. There are those big gaps, now what we use, as our very own secret ingredient to fill up those gaps is… LOVE.
